Burns change lives in an instant. Recovery takes years and no one should make that journey alone. At the BSS Initiative, our programmes address the full weight of what burn survivors face: the physical scars, the psychological toll, the social isolation, and the systems that often fail them. From the hospital ward to the community, we show up at every stage.
Burn Survivor Support
Burn Survivor SupportRecovery from a burn injury is rarely just physical. Survivors often return home to pain, stigma, changed relationships, and a world that doesn’t always know how to respond. We walk alongside them.
Our support services include:
- Emotional and psychosocial support — one-on-one sessions to help survivors process trauma and rebuild confidence
- Survivor support groups — safe spaces where people who have lived through similar experiences meet, share, and encourage one another
- Peer mentoring — connecting newly injured survivors with those further along in their recovery
- Family counselling — helping loved ones understand and support the survivor’s journey
- Rehabilitation referrals — linking survivors to physiotherapy, reconstructive care, and specialist services
- Community reintegration — practical support for returning to school, work, and everyday life
- Burn Care Support
- Burn Prevention and Awareness
- Community Outreach
- Research and Advocacy
We work directly with healthcare professionals and institutions to strengthen the quality of burn care across Nigeria.
Our activities include:
- Professional training — equipping doctors, nurses, and allied health workers with up-to-date burn care techniques.
- Capacity development — building the long-term skills of healthcare teams in under-resourced facilities.
- Educational resources — developing and distributing clinical guides, protocols, and training materials.
- Hospital and burn unit collaboration — partnering with facilities to improve patient outcomes and care standards.
- Caregiver education — training family caregivers to provide safe wound care and emotional support at home.
Most burns are preventable. That is the painful truth and the driving force behind our prevention work. We take fire safety and burn awareness directly to the people and places where burns are most likely to happen.
Our prevention programmes include:
- Fire safety education — practical sessions in homes, markets, and communities on how to prevent and respond to fires.
- School awareness campaigns — age-appropriate burn prevention programmes reaching children where they spend their days.
- Community outreach — neighbourhood-level engagement, especially in areas where open fires, kerosene stoves, and unsafe electricity are common.
- Child burn prevention — targeted initiatives to protect young children, the most vulnerable age group for scald and flame injuries.
- Advocacy for safer environments — working with local authorities to push for improved safety standards in homes and workplaces.
We believe that lasting change begins where people live. Our community outreach work builds awareness, reduces stigma around burn injuries, and connects vulnerable populations with the help they need.
We do this through:
- Health campaigns — events and screenings that bring health information directly to communities.
- Public awareness activities — using storytelling, drama, and media to shift attitudes towards burn survivors.
- Local organisation partnerships — working alongside CBOs, religious bodies, and women’s groups already trusted in their communities.
- Rural outreach — reaching communities in less accessible areas where burns are common but services are scarce.
Compassion without evidence can only go so far. We document what we see, study what works, and use that knowledge to influence the policies and systems that shape burn care in Nigeria.
This includes tracking survivor outcomes, contributing to national and regional research on burn epidemiology, and advocating at policy level for better funding, training, and infrastructure for burn care across the country.
We believe burn survivors deserve a system that is ready for them, and we are committed to building it.
Building a safer and a better world for all.
Burns devastate lives in seconds, but prevention takes just a moment of care. Know the risks. Practice safe habits. Protect your family.
